IUCAA Short Course on Astronomy & Astrophysics

IUCAA Short Course on Astronomy & Astrophysics with Night Observation Programme: (at BIET, Suri, West Bengal from 9th to 12th January, 2014)

Summer Camp: (at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nainital, 18th May to 23rd May, 2014)

South Howrah Citizens’ Forum is a partner of BIET in organising this Programme

Objective:       Astronomy is a very fascinating subject but very few students of schools and colleges get any appropriate exposure; the facility for actual observation is also very scanty. This programme aims at providing an exposure to the basics of observational astronomy to senior school students. Night observation programme will also provide the students a firsthand experience in telescopic observation. It is expected that this will make them aware of this area of science; some may be interested in making further studies in this subject.

Similar programmes were organized in January, 2012 and 2013.

Special Opportunity:

About 10 students from the participants of the Astronomy Camp at Suri in January 2014 will be selected through a competition and will be provided a week-long stay at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Manora Peak, Nainital, Uttarakhand from 18th to 23rd May, 2014. They will have lectures and telescopic observation. They will be also taken to Devasthal where the largest optical telescope of Asia is being installed.

Programme:   The programme will consists of a series of lectures and presentations on

  1. The general features of the solar system and the characteristics of the motions of the heavenly bodies as observed from the earth. Historical development of astronomy
  2. Fundamentals of positional astronomy, lunar month and solar year. Link with the seasons on the earth. Coordinate systems, planetary positions, equinoctial and solstice positions, lunar asterisms and Zodiacal constellations
  3. Characteristics of the orbital motions, laws of Keplar, secular changes

Like precession of the equinox and advance of perihelion positions.

  1. Galactic and extragalactic astronomy.
  2. Fundamentals of astrophysics – stars, galaxies and other important objects.
  3. Special topics –

a)      Telescopes
b)      Dating and calendar
c)      Cosmology
d)     Achaeo-astronomy

At night the students will be observing the night sky with 3 telescopes. They will be familiarized with important stars and constellations.

Participation: The programme is predominantly meant for class XI and XII students from various schools of West Bengal and the adjoining parts of Jharkhand.

Arrangements: The night observation programme requires sky free from light and other pollutions.

As in the previous years the programme will be arranged at BIET, Suri which is about 250 km from Kolkata bordering the hilly areas of Jharkhand in the outskirts of the district town Suri. There is adequate accommodation in boys’ and girls’ hostel in the campus and the sky is free from all pollutions. On the roof of the main institute building three telescopes are fitted during the programme.
